Sarah is a 33-year resident of Alief and a long-time community and school volunteer. In 2001, she was elected to the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Board of Directors and served as TASB President in 2009 – 2010. She has a proven record of leadership and has been a tireless advocate for her community and public education. She communicates frequently with area legislators, city council members and the mayor’s office to ensure that issues of importance to our area are addressed.
Sarah first began her community service as the treasurer of the Huntington Village HOA Board and was responsible for budgeting and investing funds. She strove to improve neighborhood safety and to provide appropriate amenities to improve the quality of life in the community.
In 1997, Sarah was elected to serve on the Alief ISD Board of Trustees. Since then, she has held many leadership positions including serving numerous times as president. She currently is the secretary of the Board. As a member of the Alief ISD Board of Trustees, Sarah and her fellow board members adopt policies to comply with state and federal laws and are responsible for reviewing and adopting a district budget in excess of $400 million.
In addition to her service at the local level, Sarah has been active in the Houston/Galveston area and has been a member of the Gulf Coast Area Association of School Boards (GCAASB) Executive Board since 2004. She has held several leadership positions including serving as president in 2005 – 2006. She is currently serving her second term as president of the GCAASB Board.
Sarah continues to volunteer in the community. She spearheaded the expansion of Alief ISD’s Mentoring Initiative and has mentored students since 1998. She has recruited business partners, parents and community members to volunteer as mentors for local youth. She often works with the Alief Super Neighborhood Council on issues of importance to our community and worked with the International Management District to establish a community garden in the area. She currently is the treasurer of the SPARK Park Board of Directors where she works with other local agencies to construct new parks that are open to the entire community.
Sarah is married and has 5 sons, all graduates of Alief ISD high schools. She also has two granddaughters. Mrs. Winkler has a B.A. in Economics and Managerial Studies and a Master of Accounting from Rice University. Her financial background has proven to be a valuable asset in her various volunteer and elected positions.
