Welcome to my campaign website. I look forward to representing the residents of District 137 and their interests in Austin.
My husband, Brad and I moved to this area thirty years ago after deciding that far Southwest Houston was the best place to raise our growing family. Throughout the years, thanks in part to having five sons, I volunteered in our community and schools and in 1997; I was elected to serve as a member of the Alief ISD Board of Trustees. Throughout my school board tenure I have worked diligently to provide a quality education for all of our children. The Alief district has faced many challenges over the years and I have first-hand experience making difficult budgetary decisions while balancing the needs of students, staff, parents, business owners, and taxpayers.
In addition to serving on a local school board, I have been involved in the community. I served as the treasurer of the Huntington Village HOA Board for six years. Despite facing dwindling resources, we worked to improve neighborhood safety and to provide the amenities residents expected and deserved. I also have worked closely with the Alief Super Neighborhood Council on several projects and recently facilitated the establishment of a new community garden in this area. As a member of the SPARK Park Board, I have supported the construction of parks at campuses throughout the Houston area that are open to the surrounding communities.
Over the years, I extended my volunteer efforts to the regional, state and federal level. I was elected to the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) in 2001 and in 2004, began serving on the Gulf Coast Area Association of School Boards (GCAASB). I served as the TASB president in 2009 – 2010. My involvement with these organizations gave me more opportunities to advocate for public education and community issues at the state and federal levels. I frequently have been invited by both representatives and senators to testify at key legislative hearings. My experience and my relationships with lawmakers will help me hit the ground running if elected. I have worked with legislators on both sides of the aisle who care about issues important to our community. I strongly believe that Texas must have lawmakers willing to work together to solve the problems facing our state.
I have a proven record of leadership and I will put my skills and knowledge towards serving the interests of our community as your State Representative. I hope that you will honor me with your vote in the Democratic primary scheduled for May 29, 2012.
